During the holidays, many of us focus on the magic of the season—beautiful decorations, festive food, and time with loved ones. But it’s crucial to remember those who may be suffering from depression or contemplating suicide. This issue has recently affected my life deeply.
A close friend lost her father, a beloved figure in their community, to suicide. After his wife passed away from cancer just a year ago, he struggled with deep-seated depression. Although he appeared good-humored, still going above and beyond for others, he was hiding his own pain. He often made comments about not wanting to continue, and people would make suggestions to seek help, but he refused, insisting he was fine and so they dismissed it. Now my friend has lost their father and the community has a lost a pillar.
I urge you to pay attention to those around you who might be masking their struggles. They might not openly express their pain, especially after significant life changes. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that there is hope and support available.
